Standing dead Red Oak

Anyone have any experience there salvaging dead standing red oak? I have new forest clients with lots of large red oaks in the 20"+ dbh range that died after back-to-back gypsy moth infestations ca 2021. The tops are starting to fall apart, and bark is beginning to fruit fine fungus. 'Any thoughts: is it 'too late' to think the wood (and carbon) within is safely salvageable?

    Hello Ed,

Our forestry team says that you'd likely only be able to salvage firewood since the tops are falling apart. Even if the wood is still sound enough for sawlogs, fungi may cause staining which can impact merchantability.

They recommend evaluating it on the ground with a forester or logger who is experienced with oak.
