Highlights of Four Years of Forest History Tours in Southern Ontario

This presentation will describe the highlights of the five forest history tours held in southern Ontario since 2019. They include looking at forests and cultural sites in Northumberland County, Durham and York Regions, St. Williams and Turkey Point, Hanover area and Guelph. Emphasis has been on early plantings in these locations. There are some examples of recent management practices. Terry will also talk about the people responsible for establishing these early forests.

Terry Schwan:

Terry has been a Professional Forester for 45 years with degrees from the University of Toronto and from Macdonald College of McGill University. He has worked in Mattawa, Ste. Anne de Bellevue, QC and Kapuskasing. He was District Forester in Guelph 1997 to 2014. He left OMNR in early 2014 and he has contracted his services to both Williams & Associates Forestry Consultants and to the Forest Gene Conservation Association as well as some other organizations. He has extensive experience in all aspects of forestry in southwestern Ontario.

He was recently on the Board of Directors of the Southern Ontario Section of the Canadian Institute of Forestry for four years and earlier with the Forest Gene Conservation Association for eight years and is presently on the Board of Forest History Ontario.

Terry is originally from Hanover. He is married with three daughters and six grandchildren.

He is author of the Historic Schwan Breweries – a family history of small-town breweries.

Most recently he has coordinated, with colleagues, five forest history tours in southern Ontario. He will be talking about these tours today.
