Are you an older landowner? Are you thinking about what will happen to your farm and your forest when you are no longer around?

There are many options for passing on land, such as gifting, donating or selling the property. All these choices differ in their impact on the tax you may pay. Many scenarios exist. For example, if the parent or grandparent of a landowner was a farmer, the owner may qualify as a farmer and avoid income tax on passing on the property to an heir. Wismer will answer questions about capital gains and rollover provisions. The tax you owe may differ, also, if the landowner has a forest management plan.

Rick Wismer is a full-time chartered accountant and a full-time farmer, who grows grapes, peaches, pears and plums on his farm in Niagara. He also raises beef cattle and manages woodlots on the Niagara property. Wismer also maintains a 500-acre woodlot in Port Loring on the Pickerel River.
