Rare plants: the hidden gems of Ontario's woodlots
Tuesday, February 27, 2023 from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EST
Southern Ontario is a hotspot for rare woodland plants, but many woodlot owners know more about exotic plants than they do about the rare native ones. Since 2014 I've been hunting for rare plants in southern Ontario forests - mostly in private woodlots. I'll describe my adventures and the work my students and I are doing to spread the word about rare plants and keep them from going extinct.
Speaker: Dr. Jenny McCune
Dr. Jenny McCune grew up on a small farm in Dufferin County with a little 10 acre bush in the back. She completed her BSc at the University of Guelph, MSc in Ethnobotany at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England, and a PhD in Botany at the University of British Columbia. She is now a professor at the University of Lethbridge, where she and her students study plant communities and plant conservation in southern Ontario and southern Alberta. You can read more about their work at jlmccune.weebly.com.
