Description
Spalted bowl. Spalting is fungal discolouration of wood in early stages of decay. I’m not sure of the species of this bowl as maples, beech, birch and hickory can develop this pattern. Can be used for salads or fruit. Finish is food safe mineral oil. Wash and dry after use then reapply mineral oil.
About the Artist - David Johnson:
Full disclosure I’m not a professional wood turner. In fact I came late to the whole idea of much wood work at all when in 1977 I moved to Frobisher Bay NWT (now Iqualit Nunavut) to work as a general practitioner- anesthesiologist for eight years. There are no trees on Baffin Island.
In 1984 we moved to Renfrew bought a small farm and set up practice. I had always enjoyed working with wood before I left for the Arctic. Shortly after arriving here I went to the wood show at Landsdowne park. At the time members of the Ottawa Woodturners club were demonstrating and showing their work was hooked-bought a lathe took lessons and then practice practice practice.
